Rapper Megan Thee Stallion performs at Vice President Harris's Atlanta rally
Vice President Harris starts her official presidential campaign in Atlanta with notable speaker Stacy Abrams and Popular music artists Megan Thee Stallion and Quavo ( from the' Migos' group). The body rapper's performance stirred lots of conversion among the Republican party, some even calling the performance inappropriate due to Megan's promiscuous stage presence. Others applaud the Harris campaign for their decision as the controversy drove engagement to her rally, and Megan's large social media platform and youth fanbase helped them gain potential votes.

Seeing how openly vocal celebrities have become about politics has been interesting. The rise in technology has made us feel closer to our favorite public figures, as many of us look up to them for guidance or inspiration on how to live our lives. The Harris and Trump teams have seen how effective having well-liked celebrity endorsements has been in bringing positive media attention to their campaign. As we read and saw in class, Harris hopes to win through the support of Gen Z voters as much of their campaign's strategy has been to make themselves appear more trustworthy and relatable to this demographic. Having Megan the Stallion perform was a smart move on Harris's team's end since much of Stallion's fans are young people who care about Stallion's opinions. Undecided voters may be swayed if they see their favorite artist issue their support for a certain candidate, and even if it does not, it is still a very effective way of making headlines. I am excited to follow your blog and see how celebrity endorsements affect voters' choice of candidates coming into election season.
ReplyDeleteI do agree with your message. I think in this day and age between technology social media both have played a huge role in the way political campaigns and representatives connect with gen z. Since social media is important and used on an everyday basis, I think Harris and Trump figured that connecting with our generations favorite celebrities or influencers will allow them to reach gen z and younger. I personally didn't like Megan's performance. I didn't think it was appropriate as in regard to the dancing. I think it's important that both Harris and Trump use people that can be taken seriously and can represent something positive. I think Megan could have connected and encouraged the audience to vote for Harris just by a powerful speech. Both campaigns are being mindful and know that they need gen z's vote, so their doing anything in order appeal to the younger crowd. Another example of this is Kamala's TikTok account, her team knows how popular the platform is and how so many people from gen z have an account.
